CHAPTER 10

“Where are you going?” Chester said, floating after me as a speed to match the quick pace of my feet on the sidewalk. “What happened in there? Did everyone get overwhelmed with emotions? I should have anticipated this; I was so important to so many people.”

“I think it was just one person that got overwhelmed,” I replied.

“Samantha?” he asked, the hope in his voice coming through loud and clear. “My poor, dear wife. I can only imagine that she doesn’t feel she has anything left to live for now. I doubt she could ever see herself married to a lesser man, if you know what I mean.”

I slowed to look at him, hoping he wasn’t making a crude reference to his own anatomy. It was more likely that he was just talking about how brilliant he was, so elevated from the common man. He was a legend in his own mind. He seemed to have some grip on the judge’s emotions, that much was clear.

“It was Judge Harris, actually,” I said.

“Oh really?” he laughed. “I bet he is frothing at the mouth at the thought of sending my killer to spend the rest of their life behind bars. Oh, I should have asked! Who was it that killed me?”

“That’s sort of the whole point of the trial, to figure that out.”

“But they have a suspect, so the trial is really making sure they have enough evidence to get a conviction! If you’d feel happier with me avoiding absolutes, then why don’t you tell me who they have accused?”

I stopped walking completely, no longer caring if people in the street caught sight of me in the middle of what looked like a conversation, I was having with myself. “A man called Nick Pine,” I replied.

“Nick?” He seemed shocked. Either he was really good at acting, or he really didn’t have any awareness that Nick had been in a romantic relationship with his wife for years. “Where does he work?”

“I have no idea,” I shrugged, turning to continue walking along the sidewalk. “Like I said, the Judge got worked up about something and told us all to come back tomorrow.”

“He’s a good man, breathtaking golfer. He gave me a few tips on my back swing that turned things around for me.”

“Are you talking about the judge?”

“Of course!” he laughed.

“Shouldn’t he recuse himself then? It’s hardly going to be a fair trial if your best friend is running the show.”

“I can understand why you would say that, but some people are able to be objective. You just take all emotion out of the equation and look at the facts, John will look at this as an impartial observer. I can promise you that!”

“Thank goodness there are so many levelheaded men around here,” I muttered sarcastically. “Hey, why don’t you head back to the hotel, and I’ll meet you there in an hour or so. I just have to grab something to eat and… well I don’t want to gloat that I still need food to live.
